Scissors are a type of tool used for cutting thick material which requires a lot force to cut.
They are used for cutting various thin materials, for example paper, cardboard, metal foil, thin plastic, cloth, rope and wire. Scissors can also be used to cut hair and food. Unlike a knife, a pair of scissors consists of two pivoted blades. Most types of scissors are not particularly sharp; it is primarily the shearing between the two blades which cuts. Children's scissors are even less sharp, and the blades are often protected with plastic.
As a matter of usage, the noun "scissors" is treated as a plural noun, and therefore takes a plural verb ("these scissors are"). Alternatively, people refer to this tool as "a pair of scissors", in which case it (a pair) is singular and therefore takes a singular verb ("this pair of scissors is"). (In theory each of the two blades of the tool is a "scissor" in its own right, although in practice such usage is seldom heard.)

AccuSharp 001 Knife SharpenerReviewsI had one of those traditional long rod type of sharpner. It was very difficult to use it and never sharpened the knife as much as one would like. This one is as good as the reviews suggest. It's extremely easy to use and very quick to sharpen. You will see a remarkable difference immediately. It's a strong buy. I originally owned this knife sharpener along with a sharpener for scissors and garden tools, and I was extremely pleased with how easy it is to sharpen a knife. The guard at the handle protects your hand thus making it very safe to handle. It is light weight and easy to store in the drawers. I truly would recommend this sharpener to anyone. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I have been using this sharpener for several months now and am very impressed. It is a quick easy way to put a sharp edge on any blade you use in the kitchen. I have used it on large and small kitchen knifes. I pulled out a knife the other day while making a dish that required sliced (halved) grape tomatoes. The knife I had was a bit dull and was squishing the tomatoes. I zipped the blade through the sharpener about 20 times, took about a minute. Then it went through the little guys zip zip zip. It's small, easy to store, and very safe. I'm going to get another one for my camping gear. I have tried several types of sharperners and this is by far the best I have ever used. It is very easy to use and will give your knife a very sharp edge. this is the real deal sharpener and its worth every last cents and when it wears out all you haave to do is buy a new one sine itss so cheap Average Rating:![]() |

Fiskars 9921 Softouch Micro-Tip Pruning SnipReviewsI bought these mainly to use for cutting flowers in my garden and tidying up my house plants. They work very well for those type of jobs. These little pruning shears are fantastic! They spring open, are sharp and work nicely in small plants, or in small areas of larger plants. I am very satisfied with these! I had doubts about the build quality and looked elsewhere based on another review about the spring. These however are very well made and even safe to stick in your pocket due to the safety lock. They cut extremely well without damaging or crushing stems which can happen with larger garden scissors or dull blades. For working with small stems these are a must have for any gardener. Anything over the thickness or toughness of a rose stem would probably be better clipped with a non micro pruner. These however work very well for trimming very delicate seedlings and tomato stems. while they should cut larger stems just fine this will dull the blade much faster when using the wrong size pruner for the job. Great service and happy with the products, recommend to anybody Fiskars brand the best, for price and all! I purchased these for my Mom for Christmas. When they arrived, I tried them and ordered her another pair with a 8" blade and ordered a pair for my self! I Love them and so does she! Average Rating:![]() |

Wüsthof Come-Apart Kitchen ShearsReviewsgreat kitchen shears... Overall, wusthof is pretty pricey.. but worth it if you have the money... I probably think twice if it wasn't on sale.. like I would go for a Victorinox/RH Forschner which I think is also good quality in terms of blade ... In this case tho, the come apart feature (with the sale price) is the selling point for me! Seems to work very well. Good price, everything arrived on time, and and good condition. No complaints. I have a pair of J.A. Henckels Twinshear Kitchen Shears that I use for everything, but the blades cannot be taken apart and the joint is hard to clean. So when I need another pair of shears for cutting up baby/toddler food, I decided to get another pair reserved specially for cooked food. This pair is really worth every single penny. The blades are very sharp, and the handling is great. One blade is serrated on the top, so food does not slip as easily. It fits perfectly in my hands (my hand is on the large side for females, but definitely smaller than an average male's). The best part is that it comes apart for cleaning very, very easily. I only need to open the blades all the way to 90 degrees and pull them apart. There is no knob or any other parts other than the blades, so there is no loose part to lose. The precise machining makes the shears feel sturdy when cutting - the blades do not shift around in other directions at all, unlike many other come-apart models - but they come apart (and go back together) in a snap. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a new pair of shears. I am even thinking of replacing my other pair, only if I can find a way to tell the two apart... My husband is the kind of lefty that thinks the world is out to get him. How else can you explain why lefties live shorter lives than righties? He usually hates scissors for this reason, but he adores these kitchen shears. I love that they come apart easily to clean. I didn't know I needed kitchen shears until after I had owned them a while- things I used to do (dangerously!) with a knife, I now use these shears for. Who knew? Well, apparently the wife did when she put these on our wedding registry! some comments on the description Amazon provides: 1. Blades come a part for easy cleaning Very true, and they come apart easily. You don't have to wrestle with them at all- and, better yet, when you put them back together they line up true- there is no wobblyness at all. 2. Can be held with either right or left hand I'm left handed and love this feature. often, when something claims to be lefty/righty, it's a dirty lie. Not this time! I didn't even think about it until I read it here, that they worked lefty/righty. Average Rating:![]() |

These powerful 8-inch kitchen shears cut food, flowers, paper, cardboard, even carpet. They're balanced in the hand and work equally well for right-handers and left-handers. Blades formed from high-carbon stainless steel curve inward so they meet in only one place at any given position and cutting action is smooth and exact... |

Scissors [VHS]ReviewsOften in film when the main character has a troubled, painful past she is either portrayed as an "unattractive" cat lover or a raving psychotic man-hater--or both. This (thankfully) is not the case in the surprisingly sympathetic "Scissors." While the plot is certainly not that original, the characterization just reached out and grabbed me. Sharon Stone, a victim of her own beauty since she seems to be valued more for her looks than her talent, is perfectly suited for the role she takes on here as a 26-year-old virgin desperate to feel normal and be happy. I can definitely see why people might pan this film. On the surface, it is a pale imitation of one of Brian DePalma's better films ("Dressed to Kill," "Sisters"). Being a firm believer that everyone brings his or her own bias along for the ride, I can't help but put my own spin on this emotionally charged film and defend its garish color. "Scissors" uses its gaudiness to effect. The very aspects that cheapen it (bright reds that scream at you, loud music and "Dress to Kill" moments in elevators) also help it cause. Angela Anderson is a virgin largely because she is a victim of sexual abuse; her senses are frightened by anything too vivid or suggestive, she can never relax or enjoy a moment. While director Frank De Felitta suggests that adult virginity itself is rather gauche and out of touch with reality, he never really mocks that state of being nor the cause of it. Instead he shows the viewer what it's like to be an attractive adult woman trying to shelter her inner child. So many times, Hollywood appears to get a thrill out of exposing its female characters to psychological and sexual torment. It's refreshing and comforting to see that absent from "Scissors" as the film snips away at preconceived notions about the sexually repressed woman. Caught this late night on TV. Very good "B" movie. Early Sharon Stone flick shows that she can act very well. For another good early Stone film check out The Year Of The Gun. Worth watching. Before Basic Instinct, there was "Scissors". Released in 1991, this obscure thriller stars Sharon Stone as the victimized patient of a crazed therapist who drives her to murder. Slight similarities to "Basic Instinct" which was not too far off have been detected. The choice of weapon in Instinct was an icepick, in this film it is a pair of scissors as the title suggests. Sharon Stone delivers a good performance, eventhough she is in a bad film with very little popularity. Everyone's heard of Basic Instinct but who's ever heard of Scissors ? Sharon plays a weak, traumatized woman whose past was painful. Her father abused her sexually and her mother killed him with a pair of scissors right in front of her eyes. The hard-up young woman seeks counseling with a therapist who turns out to be the real murderer in a vein similar to Hannibal Lecter only without the cannibalism. The mood is intense and dark and Sharon Stone has several "Mad Scenes" including one in which after murder, a black bird reminds her vocally of the deed. Sometimes, the film is hard to follow as several characters act as if they are the real brains behind the evil. In the end, Sharon Stone finally gets the guts to confront the therapist and locks him up in a building for good. As the movie ends, a variation on the duet from the opera Lakme plays and Sharon Stone rides off in a cab with the only man who truly cared for her. Ok. So this no Basic Instinct. This movie falls short on a lot of things. Basic Instinct launched Sharon Stone's career and made her famous. This movie was experimental and Sharon Stone had not yet achieved the status of star. In its own way it's still a good thriller. It can be said that this movie is for specialized interests. It's a film for fans of Miss Stone who don't mind what character she plays and in what kind of movie. For thriller fans, however bad the thriller can be or however hackneyed. An early 90's film, it really attests to its time. At one point, Stone looks like Madonna. The eerie and shocking feel of the movie was very typical of the 90's. The 90's would see other such thrillers involving crazed murderers such as Silence Of The Lambs, Misery, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, and Sleeping With The Enemy. Add this lesser known film to the rest and you have yourself a collection of good thrillers from the 90's. i don't own this movie, i just happened to see it on tv. so i looked it up on here to see when it was made...1991, just a year before "basic instinct." it's amazing what a budget will do. actually though, it's more than that. cuz "scissors" is pretty bad all around. the script is weird and ridiculous, the direction is a grotesque ape of hitchcock, and the acting - including sharon stone's - is amazingly cliched and superficial even given the material. it's bad enough to be funny, but that usually isn't enough to make me sit through a movie. which i did. it was just so whacked that i actually did want to see what happened next. so really, what am i complaining about, i don't know. i guess that's just the way you talk about this kind of film. i don't know the director but i'm no hard-core film student, so he's probably all famous and respected and i look [stupid], but whatever, all i know is that "scissors" is not a "good" movie in any traditional non-ironic sense. meaning that i think most people watching this would laugh when they were supposed to scream or something. there are a few odd parallels with "basic instinct." rather than butchering her boyfriend for kicks during sex with an icepick stashed in the sheets, stone fends off a would-be rapist in the elevator by stabbing him with a pair of scissors she has in her purse. in both films the motif of the icepick/scissors reappears obsessively, and appears to be connected with some deep-seated sexual psychopathy on the part of stone's characters - albeit in completely different ways. "instinct's" catherine trammel is a willfully homicidal and utterly liberated bisexual "risk addict," cold, calculating, in complete control of herself and her environment; "scissor's" angela anderson is more of a victim figure, a 26-year-old virgin, confused, out-of-control, constantly manipulated by those around her. catherine wins by sheer diabolical ingenuity; angela scrapes through as if by default.the plot of "scissors" is like a bizarre arbitrary hotch-pot of about a hundred thousand different films noir. like, of course she restores creepy old dolls as a living/hobby/whatever, and of course there's a wheelchair-bound creepy artist guy and a shifty two-faced father-figure shrink with unconventional ideas about therapy. cinematographically it looks like an inferior product of "the shining" era 80's - offhand i definitely would've guessed it was pre-"total recall." then again, i saw it on tv. the parts where the dolls talk to her are hilarious, then annoying, then hilarious again. not to mention ironic, cuz all the actors are very wooden and out of place. all in all, a very weird movie. if you just like to look at sharon stone you might enjoy it...otherwise go get some other crazy scissors-murder movie - there are plenty to choose from. The plot is a laugh-riot. Sharon is real pretty. Sharon makes the film toleratably...if it was cast with any other lead it would be Just Another Bad Late Night Movie.Don't bother buying this flick...it's on cable often enough. Edward Scissorhands (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)ReviewsEdward Scissorhands is such an elaborately thought out film with such simple themes - anyone can enjoy it. The film follows Edward (who without a doubt should be on a list of the best cinematic characters of all time) who deals with the sorrow of being "different" and the impossible search for happiness. This film has so many emotions packed onto one little disc! It ranges from hilarious to dark, beautiful to tragic. Amazing acting from Depp, Ryder, and especially Weist make it even more spectacular. If your in the mood for a real story, with great cinematography, acting, and music, then check out Edward Scissorhands. Edward Scissor Hands is by far my favorite love story ever to be told. It is genuine and heart touching. A man that has scissors for hands (standing out from society for his oddness) is exposed to the town that was underneath the castle he lived for so many lonely years. You can assimilate this story in so many ways, being different from the rest and falling in love with a common girl, in which a relationship of that nature would have been disgustingly disapproved by civilization. I was only 7 years old when this movie came out and yet I always felt it had touched me and exactly understood the main reason for this film being still at such young age. I will always be able to relate this film to society's behavior due to even 20 years later it has aged so well. A cult classic indeed. This Tim Burton masterpiece is the fairytale of a man born in human likeness with human emotions and feelings. However, he was never completed (his hands remain scissors) because his inventor died suddenly of a heart attack. He lived most of his life on a hill in a deserted mansion off the suburbs of a utopian town. He is discovered by a generous and loving woman who takes him into her house and adopts him as one of the family. He is quickly discovered by the gossipy neighbors who use him as a walking tree hedger. After seeing his talents with his "scissor hands" he quickly moves from trimming hedges to grooming dogs and eventually becoming a professional hairdresser for the members of the community. He falls in love with the daughter of the family he is staying with which leads to complications because in his enamored state he slowly and unknowingly begins to lose his child-like innocence. This bitter-sweet movie brings up many philosophical questions for those seeking a deep underlying message (questions e.g. ethics, aesthetics and morality). I like the acting of Johnny Depp in this movie. I think this is the best movie of him. I watched this movie when I was young, I didn't know why I suddently remember this old movie, therefore, I bought this DVD. When a mad scientist meets an early death his creation is left to fend with scissors for hands. A man with scissors for hands, is brought to live in a suburban town, with a suburban family. This movie is richly entertaining, amusing and inventive. Average Rating:![]() |

Edward Scissorhands achieves the nearly impossible feat of capturing the delicate flavor of a fable or fairy tale in a live-action movie. The story follows a young man named Edward (Johnny Depp), who was created by an inventor (Vincent Price, in one of his last roles) who died before he could give the poor creature a pair of human hands... |

Running With ScissorsReviewsIt seems there are a lot of very mixed reviews about this movie. I thought it was wonderful, and it was certainly a great idea to watch it after having read the book. The characters and scenery in the movie were a lot like how I had imagined them. My only critiques are that there were very long pauses at strange moments, and it did skip larger amounts of time than I would have imagined. The back of the DVD case called the movie a "wickedly funny" tale. Not true at all. It is one of those very warped movies, true or not, that makes you feel sick to your stomach. I tend to like the more unusual, moving films, but this is over the line. Reminds me of the Squid and the Whale. I feel very sorry for the author if this truly is based on his life. I had high expectations for this movie - I had read the book and knew that the cast had great potential. The actors were great in portraying their roles - from Annette Bening as the eccentric mother to Gwenyth Paltrow as the obedient daughter, but the plot of the movie missed the biting dark humor that had put the novel in the top 10 of my collection. I'm afraid that, if I had seen the movie before reading the book, I might not have read the book. If you've read the book, this movie adaptation will disappoint you. It barely resembles the book and really cheats the Borroughs fan who views it expecting the story in dramatization form. The movie gives little of the background circumstances that lead to the events of the premise. The story is oddly weighted to generically display a cast of characters in farce with none of the underlying sadness that the book had to propel the reader through. The characters are simply quirky and odd, not three dimensional and believable. The character of Augusten is played by an actor too old for the story and his naivete is absurd because of it. The sexual awakening in frightening and odd circumstances is watered down in the few minutes that it is even presented in this lackluster flop. Such a ridiculous rendering of what is a funny, sad, and provocative story. Take your scissors and run far far away from this movie! An exceptionally well-done adaptation of the book. Unlike a typical film, where the screenwriter thinks he or she knows better than the original bestselling author, Ryan Murphy (who also directed and produced this film) trusts the original material enough to adapt the majority of it. The casting for this movie is superb too - from the surprising appearance of Joseph Fiennes as the mentally deranged 35-year-old Bookman, who has an affair with the protagonist, to Annette Bening cast as the protagonist's mother, a woman who comes further apart at the seams with each scene we see her in to Rachel Evan Wood and Gwyneth Paltrow as the perfect fit sisters and daughters of the psychiatrist who adopts the main character. Annette Bening is the stand-out highlight in this dysfunctional "family" comedy based on the bestselling memoir by Augusten Burroughs. Although fans of the book may be slightly disappointed with the film's uneven and somewhat campy rendition of Burroughs' twisted adolescence in the 1970s, there's plenty of pleasure to be found in the work of an excellent cast led by Bening, who gives a subtle dare-to-hate-me performance as Burroughs' mother Diedre, a would-be poet who's so aloof about her teenage son Augusten (played by fresh-faced newcomer Joseph Cross, from Flags of Our Fathers) that she allows him to be legally adopted into the eccentric family of her psychiatrist, Dr... |
Mechanically, scissors are a first-class, double-lever with the pivot acting as the fulcrum. For cutting thick or heavy material, the mechanical advantage of a lever can be exploited by placing the material to be cut as close to the fulcrum as possible. For example, if the applied force (i.e., the hand) is twice as far away from the fulcrum as the cutting location (e.g., piece of paper), the force at the cutting location is twice that of the applied force at the handles. Specialized scissors, like bolt cutters exploit leverage by having a long handle but placing the material to be cut close to the fulcrum. Scissors cut material by applying a local shear stress at the cutting location which exceeds the material's shear strength.
It is most likely that scissors were invented in 1500 BC in ancient Egypt. These were probably shears with the joint at the end opposite the blades. Cross-bladed scissors were invented by the Romans around AD 100.
An immense stride in perfecting scissors was taken in 1761 when Robert Hinchliffe produced the first pair of modern-day scissors made of hardened and polished cast steel. He lived in Cheney Square, London and was reputed to be the first person who put out a signboard proclaiming himself "fine scissor manufacturer".
In a part of Sweden (now in Finland) an ironworks was started 1649 in the hamlet "Fiskars" between Helsinki and Turku. In 1830 a new owner started the first cutlery works in Finland, making, among other items, scissors with the trade mark Fiskars. Fiskars Corporation introduced new methods in the manufacturing of scissors in 1967
