Scissors are a type of tool used for cutting thick material which requires a lot force to cut.
They are used for cutting various thin materials, for example paper, cardboard, metal foil, thin plastic, cloth, rope and wire. Scissors can also be used to cut hair and food. Unlike a knife, a pair of scissors consists of two pivoted blades. Most types of scissors are not particularly sharp; it is primarily the shearing between the two blades which cuts. Children's scissors are even less sharp, and the blades are often protected with plastic.
As a matter of usage, the noun "scissors" is treated as a plural noun, and therefore takes a plural verb ("these scissors are"). Alternatively, people refer to this tool as "a pair of scissors", in which case it (a pair) is singular and therefore takes a singular verb ("this pair of scissors is"). (In theory each of the two blades of the tool is a "scissor" in its own right, although in practice such usage is seldom heard.)

AccuSharp 001 Knife SharpenerReviewsI have tried several types of sharperners and this is by far the best I have ever used. It is very easy to use and will give your knife a very sharp edge. this is the real deal sharpener and its worth every last cents and when it wears out all you haave to do is buy a new one sine itss so cheap Having spent hundreds of dollars over the years on various electric sharpeners that were a pain to use and in my unskilled hands produced dubious results, I was intrigued by this very inexpensive simple looking device on Amazon. But for the reviews, I would have assumed that it could not work. Was I ever wrong. It is great. A few simple strokes, and dull useless knives suddenly slice through things perfectly. Even roll sausage that always came out a squashed mess now slices into lovely round disks. I am in the process of giving one to everyone I know. It is wonderful when something actually works. A delight. After toting my cooking knives around in my car to drop off at the sharpening shop, never seeming to catch them open, I decided to try again at home. I chose the AccuSharp 001 and was very happy with it to say the least. Within minutes I was slicing and dicing again with "new" knives. Very happy. Would recommend them hands down. This sharpener works exactly as you would expect. This even made my inexpensive knives razor sharp! Highly recommended. Average Rating:![]() |

Wüsthof Come-Apart Kitchen ShearsReviewsgreat kitchen shears... Overall, wusthof is pretty pricey.. but worth it if you have the money... I probably think twice if it wasn't on sale.. like I would go for a Victorinox/RH Forschner which I think is also good quality in terms of blade ... In this case tho, the come apart feature (with the sale price) is the selling point for me! Seems to work very well. Good price, everything arrived on time, and and good condition. No complaints. I have a pair of J.A. Henckels Twinshear Kitchen Shears that I use for everything, but the blades cannot be taken apart and the joint is hard to clean. So when I need another pair of shears for cutting up baby/toddler food, I decided to get another pair reserved specially for cooked food. This pair is really worth every single penny. The blades are very sharp, and the handling is great. One blade is serrated on the top, so food does not slip as easily. It fits perfectly in my hands (my hand is on the large side for females, but definitely smaller than an average male's). The best part is that it comes apart for cleaning very, very easily. I only need to open the blades all the way to 90 degrees and pull them apart. There is no knob or any other parts other than the blades, so there is no loose part to lose. The precise machining makes the shears feel sturdy when cutting - the blades do not shift around in other directions at all, unlike many other come-apart models - but they come apart (and go back together) in a snap. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a new pair of shears. I am even thinking of replacing my other pair, only if I can find a way to tell the two apart... My husband is the kind of lefty that thinks the world is out to get him. How else can you explain why lefties live shorter lives than righties? He usually hates scissors for this reason, but he adores these kitchen shears. I love that they come apart easily to clean. I didn't know I needed kitchen shears until after I had owned them a while- things I used to do (dangerously!) with a knife, I now use these shears for. Who knew? Well, apparently the wife did when she put these on our wedding registry! some comments on the description Amazon provides: 1. Blades come a part for easy cleaning Very true, and they come apart easily. You don't have to wrestle with them at all- and, better yet, when you put them back together they line up true- there is no wobblyness at all. 2. Can be held with either right or left hand I'm left handed and love this feature. often, when something claims to be lefty/righty, it's a dirty lie. Not this time! I didn't even think about it until I read it here, that they worked lefty/righty. Average Rating:![]() |

Fiskars 9921 Softouch Micro-Tip Pruning SnipReviewsI bought these mainly to use for cutting flowers in my garden and tidying up my house plants. They work very well for those type of jobs. These little pruning shears are fantastic! They spring open, are sharp and work nicely in small plants, or in small areas of larger plants. I am very satisfied with these! I had doubts about the build quality and looked elsewhere based on another review about the spring. These however are very well made and even safe to stick in your pocket due to the safety lock. They cut extremely well without damaging or crushing stems which can happen with larger garden scissors or dull blades. For working with small stems these are a must have for any gardener. Anything over the thickness or toughness of a rose stem would probably be better clipped with a non micro pruner. These however work very well for trimming very delicate seedlings and tomato stems. while they should cut larger stems just fine this will dull the blade much faster when using the wrong size pruner for the job. Great service and happy with the products, recommend to anybody Fiskars brand the best, for price and all! I purchased these for my Mom for Christmas. When they arrived, I tried them and ordered her another pair with a 8" blade and ordered a pair for my self! I Love them and so does she! Average Rating:![]() |

Ta-DahReviewsTa-Dah being the Scissor Sisters 2006 release and their 2nd studio album and contained such hits as "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'", "Land of a Thousand Words" and "She's My Man". The booklet has very few photos, all the lyrics included and for each track we get to know whom plays what on the track. Elton John co-wrote some of the songs and played piano on them. 4/5. I first heard the Scissor Sisters at social dances (ballroom and club dancing). After a while, I realized that some of my favorite songs from the dances were by the same group. They're fairly inappropriate for many social situations, but certain not for dancing, or even listening to in the car. Fun and well crafted album, but none of the other tracks as good as "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"... I do love the scissor sisters and have since I first saw "Take your mama out tonight", on some music channel late one night. There seem to be a couple arguments as to the originality of their music. Of course that can be debated but what is really the point? My opinion (which I'll make short), there is rarely any original music anymore. Anyone can be compared to anyone. It's unfortunate but true. What I feel about the scissor sisters is they took quite a few different genres and ran with it. Honestly, they have songs for the club queen all the way to the rock ballad lover. I suppose the cd as a whole is most suitable for the eclectic. Those with say the violent femmes and Mika in the same playlist. You get my drift. Now I didnt give it five stars... and that was on purpose. I dont feel it was a groundbreaking album- but it is quite a ride, should you choose to let it be. Any fan of Seventies music like myself will love this album as with the debut - but what surprises the hell out of me is that not one review recognized what may well be the biggest influence upon the Scissor Sisters' sonic pallette.....put it this way, do not delay in your purchase of the following albums if money isn't an object: Blows Against The Empire, Dragonfly (featuring the minor Hot 100 hit "Ride The Tiger") Spitfire (featuring "With Your Love") and Red Octopus (this with the monster hit, "Miracles", which "The Other Side" thoroughly evokes).....any Seventies music aficianado will recognize those titles as part of the JEFFERSON STARSHIP catalogue - true, there is a LOT of Sir Elton in the Sisters' sound, but Jake Shears also vocally resembles, at turns, Andy Pratt (check out "Avenging Annie" for a near-perfect Billy Joel-Bee Gees blend and you'll readily agree it's a tune this combo needs to revive) Kenny Loggins/Lindsey Buckingham (of Fleetwood Mac) but, when not in the upper vocal reaches, frequently like a bizarre hybrid of the Starship's Marty Balin AND Grace Slick, especially on "The Other Side", "Everybody Wants The Same Thing" - even "Take Your Mama Out" from the debut. Finally, I'm even more surprised that no review acknowledged from where the ONLY source of that catchy " I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" rhythm could've been derived: "December '63 (Oh What A Night)" by Frankie Valle and the 4 Seasons, still heard many times a night in American DJ rotations..... Since not liking the Scissor Sisters is tantamount to not liking fun, let's just assume that everyone already adores this band and go on from there, OK? The Sisters' hotly anticipated second full-length feel like a streamlined continuation of their debut... |

Scissor SistersReviewsThe influences (BeeGees, Elton John, rave-era before pushing as many beats as possible) can be nearly overwhelming but if you're going to ape your influences, at least they do it well. Some of the tracks, "Take Your Mama Out", "Filthy, Gorgeous", "Laura" are strong enough to work off the dance floor. There's absolutely no excuse for the dire cover of "Comfortably Numb", which ignores both the famous guitar solo and the floating dread of the song. You can skip one or the other but not both. Maybe it works for late night club kids, tired, doses fading, but I'm too old for that: all I hear is a K-tel release. BeeGees Cover Pink Floyd! Special Budget price! Special bundle with Disco Superman Soundtrack! There's nothing on the album with a fresh sound--"Return to Oz" is strong but may as well be a Stardust era Bowie outtake--but these guys are obviously talented. LOVE IT. Get this and all the other Scissor Sister CD's. WELL worth it...they probably get the most play of all my ipod stuff. This band is a little piece of heaven. This and their sophmore album, Ta-Dah, are incredible. You're a fool if you don't buy them. This CD is totally awesome. I received the CD very quickly and in excellent condition. I tell you there isn't a bad song on this set; the boys and girl from the girtty part of New York City that is still in tact, the Scissor Sisters conquered the UK of course; since unlike any US counterparts lately, they actually enjoy good music across the pond. Combining the elements of Robbie Williams, Elton John, Beck and just about every other enchanting lad of late, the album is a dance wave rock rave from beginning to end - "Filthy Gorgeous", "Take Your Mama Out", the reworking of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" - no matter where your random button hits you're going to hear a dose of pure pop genius. When the album came out I began putting random Scissor Sisters songs on the compilation discs I made and let me tell you I made fans out of every single person who ran and bought the album themselves - and hello Jake Shears can tear up the scenery and there are two gay boys in the band! It's about time music can be music and not just a sub category of queer rock. It gives me hope for the likes of oh, I don't know my band Swivek. Oh and if you haven't already bought it - get We Are Scissor Sisters and So Are You! - a concert film that has tons of fun extras and one of the best live performances I've seen in a while. Those dismissing the self-titled Scissor Sisters as a product of New York's latest band fad are jumping to conclusions. Yes, there's a certain cabaret aspect to what they do, but that's not to dismiss them as frivolous nightclub entertainment... |

Running with ScissorsReviewsIn this hectic world of lonely confusion it is only human to seek connection--to search in vain hope for some understanding. I found that long-sought understanding here in the melodious words of Weird Al. Even the title of this CD is an expression of free thought and defiance against conventional understanding* Especially notable tracks are: 1. The Saga Begins -- This songs time by accurately summarizing Starwars Episode I is only a few minutes. Also it is much more memorable. 4. The Weird Al Show Theme -- This absurdist ballad of one man's journey to sucess expresses frustration in the futility of struggling in a senseless world where that sucess is more likely found in random coincidence. 6. Germs -- This song connects with the collective paranoia of Modern Society, while exacerbating that paranoia. 8. Your Horoscope For Today With its painfully accurate lyrics, this song speaks for everyone who knows their astrological sign. "You are the true Lord of the Dance, no matter what those idiots at work say" Al believes in you. "The stars say that you're an exciting and wonderful person, but you know they're lying" Al understands you. 10. Truck Drivin' Song This song highlights the hypocrisy of Modern Society as it describes one man's continual defiance against Society's expectations. 12. Albuquerque The tragic tale of a man who survives against all odds while haunted by a past that reeks of saurkraut. This CD could possibly change your life. *This review in no way condones the practice of running with scissors--that's on you buddy. Running with Scissors is forty-nine minutes and fifty-four seconds long and was released on June 29, 1999. Running with Scissors went Reached #16 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums chart and #3 on the Top Internet Albums and has since gone Platinum. It reached #3 on the Though none of the songs entered the US charts, Pretty Fly for a Rabbi reached #67 on the Australian Recording Industry Association charts. This is a good, but not great CD to listen to. The one song I can't stand is Albuquerque. It is way too long. Other then that, the rests of the songs are great to listen to. Running with Scissors get a B+. The Saga Begins My Baby's in Love with Eddie Vedder Pretty Fly for a Rabbi The Weird Al Show Theme Jerry Springer Germs Polka Power! Your Horoscope for Today It's All About the Pentiums Truck Drivin' Song Grapefruit Diet Albuquerque The Saga Begins is one of my favorite songs. Interestingly, the song that it parodies (American Pie) is one of my LEAST favorite songs. I guess it just goes to show you. Pretty Fly For a Rabbi is very good as well as All About the Pentiums. Overall, a fun album. This is one of Al's better albums and sees himself getting more serious at parodying complicated music with even trendier lyrical topics. The Sage Begins, Pretty Fly for a Rhabbi and the polka medley are standout tracks. Overall, this album will date from like 2005 as daily horoscopes were no longer popular by 2006 and by 2007 we can see Al as an intelligent guy. I've been listening to Al since the 80s and he changed with the times, he didn't just keep on doing retreads he parodied last year's annoying hit songs. Yeah, if you were at a party, I don't think someone would say put on some Weird Al... First of all, let me say "woooooooooooooooooooooooow." This album great and most certainly go down as one of Al's greatest hits. First off is "The Saga Begins" a funny Star Wars song with Obi Wan telling the story of the first Episode. Then there's " My Baby's in Love With Eddie Veder" I myself have never hear of Eddie Veder but all the same, the song is very funny with Al's girl friend falling head-over-heels in love with Eddie. Then there's "Pretty Fly For a Rabbi" anoth great parody of "Pretty Fly For a White Guy". The song's very funny! Then "Weird Al Theme Song" which of course was the theme song for his saturday morning show. There's much much more but I'm going to stop here. The album is great! You'd have to be an idiot to say it's boring and not funny. But before I leave off I want to tell you about the last song, "Albuquerque". LOL!!! I laughed my butt off listening to it! It's hard to describe, more a story than a song, but non-the-less knock-your-shoes-off funny! If I could give this album ten stars I most certainly would! Keep up the awesome work Al! Scissors [VHS]ReviewsOften in film when the main character has a troubled, painful past she is either portrayed as an "unattractive" cat lover or a raving psychotic man-hater--or both. This (thankfully) is not the case in the surprisingly sympathetic "Scissors." While the plot is certainly not that original, the characterization just reached out and grabbed me. Sharon Stone, a victim of her own beauty since she seems to be valued more for her looks than her talent, is perfectly suited for the role she takes on here as a 26-year-old virgin desperate to feel normal and be happy. I can definitely see why people might pan this film. On the surface, it is a pale imitation of one of Brian DePalma's better films ("Dressed to Kill," "Sisters"). Being a firm believer that everyone brings his or her own bias along for the ride, I can't help but put my own spin on this emotionally charged film and defend its garish color. "Scissors" uses its gaudiness to effect. The very aspects that cheapen it (bright reds that scream at you, loud music and "Dress to Kill" moments in elevators) also help it cause. Angela Anderson is a virgin largely because she is a victim of sexual abuse; her senses are frightened by anything too vivid or suggestive, she can never relax or enjoy a moment. While director Frank De Felitta suggests that adult virginity itself is rather gauche and out of touch with reality, he never really mocks that state of being nor the cause of it. Instead he shows the viewer what it's like to be an attractive adult woman trying to shelter her inner child. So many times, Hollywood appears to get a thrill out of exposing its female characters to psychological and sexual torment. It's refreshing and comforting to see that absent from "Scissors" as the film snips away at preconceived notions about the sexually repressed woman. Caught this late night on TV. Very good "B" movie. Early Sharon Stone flick shows that she can act very well. For another good early Stone film check out The Year Of The Gun. Worth watching. Before Basic Instinct, there was "Scissors". Released in 1991, this obscure thriller stars Sharon Stone as the victimized patient of a crazed therapist who drives her to murder. Slight similarities to "Basic Instinct" which was not too far off have been detected. The choice of weapon in Instinct was an icepick, in this film it is a pair of scissors as the title suggests. Sharon Stone delivers a good performance, eventhough she is in a bad film with very little popularity. Everyone's heard of Basic Instinct but who's ever heard of Scissors ? Sharon plays a weak, traumatized woman whose past was painful. Her father abused her sexually and her mother killed him with a pair of scissors right in front of her eyes. The hard-up young woman seeks counseling with a therapist who turns out to be the real murderer in a vein similar to Hannibal Lecter only without the cannibalism. The mood is intense and dark and Sharon Stone has several "Mad Scenes" including one in which after murder, a black bird reminds her vocally of the deed. Sometimes, the film is hard to follow as several characters act as if they are the real brains behind the evil. In the end, Sharon Stone finally gets the guts to confront the therapist and locks him up in a building for good. As the movie ends, a variation on the duet from the opera Lakme plays and Sharon Stone rides off in a cab with the only man who truly cared for her. Ok. So this no Basic Instinct. This movie falls short on a lot of things. Basic Instinct launched Sharon Stone's career and made her famous. This movie was experimental and Sharon Stone had not yet achieved the status of star. In its own way it's still a good thriller. It can be said that this movie is for specialized interests. It's a film for fans of Miss Stone who don't mind what character she plays and in what kind of movie. For thriller fans, however bad the thriller can be or however hackneyed. An early 90's film, it really attests to its time. At one point, Stone looks like Madonna. The eerie and shocking feel of the movie was very typical of the 90's. The 90's would see other such thrillers involving crazed murderers such as Silence Of The Lambs, Misery, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, and Sleeping With The Enemy. Add this lesser known film to the rest and you have yourself a collection of good thrillers from the 90's. i don't own this movie, i just happened to see it on tv. so i looked it up on here to see when it was made...1991, just a year before "basic instinct." it's amazing what a budget will do. actually though, it's more than that. cuz "scissors" is pretty bad all around. the script is weird and ridiculous, the direction is a grotesque ape of hitchcock, and the acting - including sharon stone's - is amazingly cliched and superficial even given the material. it's bad enough to be funny, but that usually isn't enough to make me sit through a movie. which i did. it was just so whacked that i actually did want to see what happened next. so really, what am i complaining about, i don't know. i guess that's just the way you talk about this kind of film. i don't know the director but i'm no hard-core film student, so he's probably all famous and respected and i look [stupid], but whatever, all i know is that "scissors" is not a "good" movie in any traditional non-ironic sense. meaning that i think most people watching this would laugh when they were supposed to scream or something. there are a few odd parallels with "basic instinct." rather than butchering her boyfriend for kicks during sex with an icepick stashed in the sheets, stone fends off a would-be rapist in the elevator by stabbing him with a pair of scissors she has in her purse. in both films the motif of the icepick/scissors reappears obsessively, and appears to be connected with some deep-seated sexual psychopathy on the part of stone's characters - albeit in completely different ways. "instinct's" catherine trammel is a willfully homicidal and utterly liberated bisexual "risk addict," cold, calculating, in complete control of herself and her environment; "scissor's" angela anderson is more of a victim figure, a 26-year-old virgin, confused, out-of-control, constantly manipulated by those around her. catherine wins by sheer diabolical ingenuity; angela scrapes through as if by default.the plot of "scissors" is like a bizarre arbitrary hotch-pot of about a hundred thousand different films noir. like, of course she restores creepy old dolls as a living/hobby/whatever, and of course there's a wheelchair-bound creepy artist guy and a shifty two-faced father-figure shrink with unconventional ideas about therapy. cinematographically it looks like an inferior product of "the shining" era 80's - offhand i definitely would've guessed it was pre-"total recall." then again, i saw it on tv. the parts where the dolls talk to her are hilarious, then annoying, then hilarious again. not to mention ironic, cuz all the actors are very wooden and out of place. all in all, a very weird movie. if you just like to look at sharon stone you might enjoy it...otherwise go get some other crazy scissors-murder movie - there are plenty to choose from. The plot is a laugh-riot. Sharon is real pretty. Sharon makes the film toleratably...if it was cast with any other lead it would be Just Another Bad Late Night Movie.Don't bother buying this flick...it's on cable often enough. Minutes To Sew: A One-Hour Video by TV's Nancy Zieman |
|
Nancy Zieman, hostess of TV's "Sewing With Nancy," brings her 3-part series on "Minutes To Sew" to you on this 60 minute video. Highlights of the video include modifying pattern instructions to take advantage of updated techniques and new notions, dividing sewing projects into shorter sewing units, applying facings while garments are still flat, adding a speedy sports pocket, and much, much more! |
Mechanically, scissors are a first-class, double-lever with the pivot acting as the fulcrum. For cutting thick or heavy material, the mechanical advantage of a lever can be exploited by placing the material to be cut as close to the fulcrum as possible. For example, if the applied force (i.e., the hand) is twice as far away from the fulcrum as the cutting location (e.g., piece of paper), the force at the cutting location is twice that of the applied force at the handles. Specialized scissors, like bolt cutters exploit leverage by having a long handle but placing the material to be cut close to the fulcrum. Scissors cut material by applying a local shear stress at the cutting location which exceeds the material's shear strength.
It is most likely that scissors were invented in 1500 BC in ancient Egypt. These were probably shears with the joint at the end opposite the blades. Cross-bladed scissors were invented by the Romans around AD 100.
An immense stride in perfecting scissors was taken in 1761 when Robert Hinchliffe produced the first pair of modern-day scissors made of hardened and polished cast steel. He lived in Cheney Square, London and was reputed to be the first person who put out a signboard proclaiming himself "fine scissor manufacturer".
In a part of Sweden (now in Finland) an ironworks was started 1649 in the hamlet "Fiskars" between Helsinki and Turku. In 1830 a new owner started the first cutlery works in Finland, making, among other items, scissors with the trade mark Fiskars. Fiskars Corporation introduced new methods in the manufacturing of scissors in 1967
